Cape Arago is one of those special places along the Oregon Coast that can put on a show under the right conditions. I remember my first time camping here over Thanksgiving in 2017. I knew nothing about these huge waves. I'd never seen a photograph or anything. Then on the morning of December 1st, I set out to hike and explore the Cape Arago coastline, which by the way is one of the best hikes you will find along the coast. I got out of my truck at Shore Acres State Park and immediately heard some thunderous pops from the parking lot. I was thinking to myself that's really strange and was wondering what could have caused it. I made my way to edge of the cliffs where I could see the ocean and was blown away at what I was witnessing. These 20-25 foot monster swells were breaking right on the rocks and exploding over 200ft in the air. I couldn't believe my eyes. I'd never seen anything like this before. For it to be totally unexpected made it all that much better. I spent all day shooting the waves in every direction I could. I decided to try something different for sunset by shooting some long exposures as the water created all these little waterfalls as it flowed back down to the ocean. I eventually just had to wait and wait and time it just right when I monster wave hit in the distance, so that I could also get some waterfalls on the closer rocks. It ended up being a really unique shot that I absolutely love. It was this day when I realized how important it was to always check surf reports for wind direction and how big the swells are going to be. Even though it might be a clear day out and not worth getting out of bed, the ocean might be churning and creating magic that is worth shooting!
