I was doing some kayak photography here when I came across a great blue heron snaring a monster fish at Stockade Lake in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Still not sure how I managed this one because it was totally by luck. I was actually watching another heron about 20 ft further up when i decided to inch my way a little closer to a little bend in the water along the shore, where I thought i could keep my kayak from continuously drifting. What I didn't know was that there was another heron already in my spot and as soon as I cleared the tall grass and about to turn, bam, i was literally within 3 ft of this scene and both of us completely startled.
